One evening, eight Mennonite women climb into a hay loft to conduct a secret meeting. For the past two years, each of these women, and more than a hundred other girls in their colony, has been repeatedly violated in the night by demons coming to punish them for their sins. Now that the women have learned they were in fact drugged and attacked by a group of men from their own community, they are determined to protect themselves and their daughters from future harm. While the men of the colony are off in the city, attempting to raise enough money to bail out the rapists and bring them home, these women-all illiterate, without any knowledge of the world outside their community and unable even to speak the language of the country they live in-have very little time to make a choice: Should they stay in the only world they've ever known or should they dare to escape? Based on real events and told through the "minutes" of the women's all-female symposium, Toews's masterful novel uses wry, politically engaged humor to relate this tale of women claiming their own power to decide.-- Publisher's description.

So-so submitted by denisemw on July 31, 2019, 7:55pm I read so much about this book that I was excited to read it but I found it disappointing. Very intriguing plot line but just did not deliver. I found it difficult to follow the characters as the names were not easily remembered.

Pretty good submitted by zwachtel50 on July 23, 2023, 9:25pm I thought the premise of this book was interesting and the story really drew me in, but it really is an entire book of the women “talking.” Obviously the topic of their discussion is very serious and important, but there were still times when I felt that the story wasn’t really moving. The writing was good and overall it was an important story to tell, but not always the most exciting

Unsure How I Feel submitted by Droeske1 on March 23, 2024, 4:30am I agree with the others about the plot and the story. I do love a good cult story, this one missed the mark on the "good" part though. I wasn't a fan of the narrator being a male when it was about women, granted I understand the women being illiterate played a part in this decision. I found some of the content to be interesting but the first half was just meh.
